Brush & Blush: One Stop Luxury and Styling

A feature of the Memorial District for four years, Brush & Blush is a luxury beauty bar that has garnered a reputation for a great blow out, expert make up applications and luxury touches.

Bright and open, the salon has luxury elements and a sweet charm: clean lines and lavender accents, Glamcor Makeup Mirrors and massaging shampoo chairs.

When owner Greer McDonald decided to open her own business after a career in nursing, she sought to provide more than a good hairstyle. Whether making up a high school student for prom, styling NFL wives staying at the nearby Westin or giving a paraplegic a comfortable space to be pampered, part of Greer’s focus has been making every client feel welcome, treated and beautiful.

She adds, “What separates from most other blow dry bars is that we do make up as well and we retail high-end make up.” Each brand that Brush & Blush carries is well thought out from makeup by Kevyn Aucion to hair products by Living Proof.

Beyond serving customers, Greer has created a community among her team and works hard to provide a supportive environment. She says, “When you use Brush & Blush you really are supporting local business. We’re not a chain … Really, every dollar spent goes toward someone’s ballet lessons, someone’s first home, supporting women and their children.”

Services include blowouts and hairstyles, split end repair and deep condition treatments, Brazilian blow-out, extension, and makeup application from red carpet to timeless everyday looks. Want to create your own professional makeup look at home? Sign up for a one-on-one or group makeup class.

Brush & Blush also comes to you for onsite styles and makeup for weddings, parties and events. Or host your own private event at the salon.

Kuu opened in 2014 and has been wooing customers ever since with its bold play on Japanese flavors inspired by locally-sourced ingredients. A dynamic feature in the Memorial District, Kuu is consistently ranked among the best sushi restaurants in the city.

Chef-owner Adison Lee has taken the meaning of Kuu-“the art of eating”- seriously and created a menu that is as interesting as it is refined, elevating modern Japanese cuisine.

All of Kuu’s ingredients are locally sourced except for weekly shipments of proteins from Japan’s famous Tsukiji Market. Chef Lee’s focus on quality and freshness is evident in every bite.

In addition to sushi, sashimi and rolls, customer favorites include the rich and tangy Truffle Suzuki Roll and the fish selection. Diners interested in tapas-style dishes should try small plates from the Hot and Cold menu which often feature Chef Lee’s newest creations. The Featured Tastings menu highlight market and seasonal dishes, and the indulgent Omakase is a chef’s tasting of fresh and special items tailored to the customer’s interests and taste preferences.

Another feature of Kuu is the extensive wine selection. Wine pairs well with sushi and in exploring the addition of wine to fine Japanese dining, Kuu has curated a wine selection that has earned an excellence rating from Wine Spectator magazine in 2016 and 2017.

With a friendly staff that’s as passionate about customer service as Lee is about food, this chef-driven restaurant is an experience, not just good eating.

Don’t miss Kuu any day of the week, but make sure to take advantage of their fantastic weekday happy hours from 4:30pm to 6:30pm and Two-for-One Sushi Sundays from 12pm to 4:30pm.
Visit Kuu at the Gateway, 947 Gessner Road, on online at www.kuurestaurant.com.

A dynamic dining option at The Gateway, State Fare’s bold take on Southern flavors are sure to please any palate.

The restaurant, on the southwest corner of Gessner and the Katy Freeway, is as inviting as its menu. Decked out in cool blues and neutrals, the mix of industrial and tufted, subway tiles and marble work in the best way, much like the food at State Fare: interesting meets classic with modern twists on Southern comfort.

Opened in 2016, State Fare is part of the Cherry Pie Hospitality family of restaurants owned by Lee Ellis with partner Jim Mills. Mills notes, “State Fare has a cool vibe, and when guests enter they are greeted with friendly smiles and a sense of true hospitality.”

The menu has over 70 items ranging from snacks and salads to chicken fried steak and mac n’ cheese. “The menu is highly representative of Southeast Texas cuisine featuring ample portions of tasty classics, fresh seafood and delicious salads. The creative idea behind the menu is to showcase the great food that Lee Ellis and I grew up loving,” says Mills.

In addition to great food, Leslie Harvey has crafted eclectic and innovative cocktails and curated a range of over 40 craft beers. Mills adds, “We appeal to local families, business professionals and visitors alike.” And don’t miss State Fare’s decadent brunch offering on Saturday and Sundays starting at 10am.

Mills menu favorites include, “Sabine Pass Gumbo and Ray’s Fried Catfish, which features my Dad’s recipe. Quite a few dishes are from family recipes which sets State Fare apart from most other restaurants of the genre.”
