The trains are in the station! Every Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon, make time to visit Memorial City Station, home of the Houston Tinplate Operators Society (HTOS). Founded in 1988, HTOS is an O-gauge model train club that meets weekly to promote their hobby and share it with guests at the Memorial City Station tucked in the west mall entrance by Target.
With 4 operating layouts, there is so much to take in. A large portable layout dominates the space, layered with beautifully detailed models and scenes, multiple trains running the perimeter, and an intricate set of relays keeping the circuits firing. The two windows feature a seasonal layout and a permanent layout and an American Flyer S-gauge layout.
The layouts are in themselves a draw for kids, but there is also a wooden play layout and a layout treasure hunt. Have a train lover in your life? HTOS is a fun space for birthday parties, scouting trips and private group events.
One of the best features of visiting the station is drawing on the knowledge of HTOS members. Whether you want to know more about a layout, need help with your personal trains, or have questions about model railroading, the HTOS members are welcoming and keen to share.
Memorial City Station is open Tuesdays from 7pm to 9pm and Saturdays from 1pm to 5pm For more information visit the website at www.trainweb.org/htos or stop by the Memorial City Station.
Marlo Miller Boutique takes style in the Memorial District to a whole new level. For those who have shopped here, it’s no wonder the boutique has been voted best in the city year after year.
Owner Marlo Miller has a flair for color, an appreciation for flattering lines and knows how add to an outfit a touch of something special. Her styling has been seen on Debra Duncan, anchors from Channel 39 and throughout the pages of local magazines, most recently Swoon Memorial.
Miller says, “Our clothes are comfortable, stylish, with a flare that fits all body types well. We carry sizes XS-XL and some items 1X,2X & 3X. We have many clothing options from by the pool to having a cocktail after 5.”
When Miller opened the doors to her boutique, she built her business on her personal styling. “I know my clothes and I know what looks good on a body type,” she says. Her ability to match a look with a client truly sets her apart. She offers complimentary styling services at the boutique either during store hours or by private appointment.
This Spring, Marlo Miller Boutique has a great selection of embroidered tops and dresses, statement hat and dress pairings for Kentucky Derby parties and chic looks for Mother’s Day. Her boutique offers everything from dresses, to Old Gringo Cowboy boots which are always a hit during Rodeo season, one of the boutique’s busiest times.
