Make Memorial Day Weekend Memorable

Memorial Day Weekend is a time to pay respects to fallen soldiers who served to keep America the land of the free. It’s also considered the unofficial start of summer. There are activities, brunches, and fun attractions to enjoy over the long weekend in the Memorial District.

Begin the festivities with Friday Family Movie Night in the Square at Memorial City, where you can catch Toy Story 4 for free on the enormous 24'x14′ HDTV from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Head to the Plaza at CITYCENTRE from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for live music. Catch pop musician Jon David Finney on Friday, May 28; R&B musician Kameron Williams on Saturday, May 29; and Christian musician Zack Meeks on Sunday, May 30.

 

Looking for a budget-friendly activity? Take a bike tour scavenger hunt of the Memorial District to look for the patriotic art in UP Art Studio's Mini Murals project, such as local artist Joy Matheson’s mural at Memorial City. Similarly, you can hunt for art in the third annual Art @ CITYCENTRE. Because May is National Bike Month, you can find great deals on bike rides in the Memorial District.

 

Give back in honor of Memorial Day. Participate in one of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's two Memorial Day Weekend mobile blood drives. The first will be in the Plaza at CITYCENTRE from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 29. The second will be in the south parking lot of Memorial City near the food court entrance from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. At the latter, all donors will get a coupon for a free 8-ounce shaved ice. Plus, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will donate $5 to Wounded Warrior on each donor's behalf. Many Memorial District restaurants will have delicious brunch specials over the Memorial Day Weekend. For example, enjoy the "Ultimate Brunch Buffet" at Churrascos until 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 30. Keep an eye out for updates on our Facebook page.

Then, on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, celebrate with Memorial City's Remember and Honor event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a patriotic presentation of colors and a majestic flyover by the Commemorative Air Force. This event also includes a live band, face painting, balloon art, and much more!

If you love to set a cozy mood with candles, check out their candle collections, which come in heavenly scents, and try their essential oil diffuser too. Faux fur blankets in pretty colors are excellent for cozying up on the sofa for a day indoors during cold winter days. 

Speaking of items for winter, Anything Bling has gorgeous sweaters perfect for creating a stylish outfit and keeping warm. Look for other fun gifts, like a Fujifilm Instant Camera, which lets your group take cool pictures and develop them in seconds. For men of all ages, you cannot go wrong with a watch, and Fossil at Memorial City certainly knows how to craft a beautiful timepiece. You can see the American vintage inspiration in all of this brand's products. They might be timepieces, but they look timeless.

In the mood for delicious Asian flavors? Visit CITYCENTRE’s new upscale Thai food eatery, Yi Peng, when it opens in Fall 2020.
Executive Chefs Jett and Jira Hurapan, the dynamic duo behind Yi Peng, opened the restaurant and named it after the annual autumn lantern festival in Chiang Mai. During the festival, which celebrates the full moon, thousands of sky lanterns fill the city sky.
For that reason, the Yi Peng team decked out the establishment with ornate lanterns. Furthermore, walls have beautiful murals that reflect the look and feel of a dining experience in northern Thailand.

The menu features a stunning array of Thai foods and specialty cocktails. Aspects of the menu focus on dishes specific to the northern region of Thailand, which means you can expect delicious herbs and spices.
For example, the restaurant’s Operations Manager, Liz Jiratantasin, said signature dishes include:
• Homemade Sai Ua — Chiang Mai grilled spicy sausage with aromatic roasted chili spices and lemongrass
• Handcraft Chor Muang — Gluten-free Royal Thai steamed dumpling with roasted garlic oil, fresh Thai chili, and herb wrap in green leaf lettuce
• Kang Hung Lay — Northern-style braised curry beef short ribs with Thai spices and Chinese broccoli
Plus, the fabulous experience does not end with great food. Yi Peng also plans to offer Thai food cooking classes.
The restaurant encompasses a 3,500-square-foot space on Sorella Court, and the main dining room seats 60 people. Additionally, the patio seats 28, the private dining area on the mezzanine level seats 24, and the chef’s table seats 8. The roomy seating and outdoor space are helpful for socially distanced meals.
“We practice the highest standard of cleanliness and sanitization,” Jiratantasin told us. “We ensure daily wellness checks for staff members. We wear face masks, and we have hand-sanitizer stations and contactless pickup.”

Jiratantasin thinks people will love Yi Peng’s chef-driven concept and said the restaurant uses high-quality ingredients and exotic herbs from Thailand.
“We hope people visit and enjoy the highlights of Thai culture Yi Peng offers,” Jiratantasin said. Yi Peng is among the many exciting developments and restaurant openings and reopenings right here in the Memorial District.

Bring your appetite to the Memorial District for Houston Restaurant Weeks! This fabulous annual event showcases meals at restaurants throughout southeast Texas, including many establishments right here in the Memorial District. This year, Houston Restaurant Weeks runs from August 1 to September 7.

Houston Restaurant Weeks is the largest annual fundraiser for the Houston Food Bank, whose mission is to provide food for better lives. It is a certified member of Feeding America, the nation's food bank network. Participating establishments give $1 per meal to the Houston Food Bank. In 2019, Houston Restaurant Weeks provided more than 104 million meals in 18 counties of southeast Texas.

This year, most participating restaurants have special Houston Restaurant Weeks menus for delivery and takeout. Call participating restaurants before you visit. Verify the days of the week for Houston Restaurant Weeks meal services. Walk-in services might be available, and reservations are not always necessary. Still, it is a good idea to call in advance. Because of COVID-19 concerns, Houston Restaurant Weeks establishments also offer safe delivery and takeout options.

Contact information for each participating restaurant is available on the Houston Restaurant Weeks website. When you call, remember to mention that you want the Houston Restaurant Weeks special menu. That way, the restaurant knows to donate to the Houston Food Bank from the proceeds of your meal.

CITYCENTRE has some of the District’s favorite shops, restaurants and entertainment, however many first-time and repeat guest aren’t sure where to find the best parking to meet their needs. Here is your Memorial District guide to Parking at CITYCENTRE to make it a little easier.

CITYCENTRE has three parking options: street, garage, and valet. In recent years CITYCENTRE has converted street parking and 1st floor garage parking to metered, leaving70% of the parking free to the public!

Street parking includes all open spaces in front of shops and restaurants in and around the plaza and along the Beltway feeder. Street parking is $2.50 per 30 minutes with a maximum of $25 and can be paid with cash or credit card at meter stations or through the Passport Parking app. First-time users of Passport Parking can get a FREE parking session with discount code 713713. Great news is a portion of all money collected goes to Memorial Assistance Ministries to help local families in need.

CITYCENTRE has four parking garages. These garages offer a mix of paid, reserved, and free spaces. A new electronic guidance system helps guests find a spot more efficiently. The light above a space is green if the space is available, red if it’s unavailable and purple if it is reserved. First-floor parking is available in Garages 1 (Studio Movie Grill), 2 (Brio & Sephora), and 3 (LifeTime Athletic) for $1.50 per 30 minutes with a maximum of $15. In all garages, level 2 and above are free, though some spaces may be reserved for tenants or valet. Garage 5 is attached to the CITYCENTRE FIVE building. Please reference the details breakdown of each garage below and view the CITYCENTRE map for a full layout.

On Friday and Saturday nights when CITYCENTRE is busiest, Garage 3 usually has less vehicle traffic as it’s the easiest to get in and out of, is larger and more open.

Valet parking is available in five designated areas for $8 (hours vary per stand); overnight hotel valet parking is $21 per night. Valet parking is always complimentary for Sewell Cadillac customers.

Still don’t want to navigate the parking garages, the following restaurants validate valet tickets when you patronize their establishment: Zayed’s, The General Public, Eddie V’s, Seasons 52, The Capital Grille, Brio, Radio Milano, and Bowl & Barrel.

Wherever you park, navigating through the beautiful plaza or getting a feel for the retail and restaurant offerings, it makes for an engaging experience.
