Remember Fallen Service Members and Make Memories This Memorial Day Weekend

May 23, 2022

Memorial Day is a time to remember, honor, and thank service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy. After two years without gathering, this Memorial Day is a particularly special time for celebration—and the unofficial start of summer. Celebrate with fun family activities, restaurant specials, shopping deals, and other attractions in the Memorial District over the long weekend.

On Friday, May 20, bring the kids to CITYCENTRE to begin the festivities with the British International School of Houston's parachute playtime from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be arts and crafts activities, games, and parachute fun. For adult outdoor exercise, join the CITYCENTRE Running Club in front of lululemon at 6 p.m. for a 3.5-mile run followed by happy hour at a CITYCENTRE restaurant on Memorial Day. Be sure to check out the Global Running Day on Wednesday, June 1, too.

Kickstart the weekend on Friday, May 20, for "Live! on The Lawn" from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on The Lawn at Memorial City Mall—971 Bunker Hill Road. Enjoy live music and the Shops Under the Arbor curated by Heart to Market. Each show features a new artist, so check the calendar to pick your favorite or catch all three. There will be food and drinks for purchase from Ciro's Italian Grill. Plus, stop by the Memorial City table during May for your chance to win a $100 gift card to Zara.

Additionally, stop in for a social hour on Friday at Daily Gather restaurant from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. or the General Public restaurant, where it's happy "hourly" every day. The price of draft beers, house cocktails, and wines by the glass is the price of the hour—$3 at 3 p.m., $4 at 4 p.m., and $5 at 5 p.m.

Over Memorial Day Weekend at Hopdoddy, guests can get half-off the Roadie when ordering Hopdoddy's DIY Burger Kit by using the code "WEEKEND" at checkout. Or patronize Grimaldi's Pizzeria, where they offer 15% to service members, veterans, and retirees every single day of the year. If the weather has you feeling like some cold raw oysters, head over to Liberty Kitchen for live music (only at the Memorial location) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

For a true weekend extravagance, treat yourself to a great holiday weekend staycation while honoring the spirit of Memorial Day. When you book the Memorial Day package at The Moran, they will donate $50 to USO Houston for every night of your stay.

Many retailers will be featuring great deals over Memorial Day weekend. What better occasion to take the special little girl in your life shopping at Memorial City Mall for a visit to Houston's only American Girl store? Not only will you find the classic American Girl dolls that can help teach little girls the history of the United States through the girls' stories, but there are also activities like Flowerpot Decorating and Cooking with Dad in May and June.

Are you planning to entertain poolside at home? The Memorial District has you covered (literally) with endless summer fashion and swim apparel and accessories options and fresh outdoor entertaining pieces. Protect your eyes with sunglasses from Sunglass Hut in Town & Country Village, where you will find high-quality fashion and performance sunglasses. While there, create your summer look with a great linen dress from J. McLaughlin's new collection.
