Developing a Better Future for West Houston

September 19, 2018

The population of Greater West Houston is projected to grow from 1.75 million in 2017 to over 3.2 million by 2060 and West Houston Association is poised to address this population growth and all of the challenges it will present in its newly-released West Houston 2060 Plan.

The plan contains policy and project recommendations for eight segments: population and jobs; regional mobility; water resources; flood control, drainage and wetlands; education and workforce development; parks, recreation and open space; quality planned development; and sustainable infrastructure. The new plan is a follow up to the West Houston 2050 Plan that was rolled out in 2007 and updated in 2010.

“People are demanding different kinds of solutions,” said John Moody, Chairman of West Houston Association and Co-Chair of the West Houston 2060 Plan. “We don’t want to give a 1950s solution that we are going to live with 100 years from now.  This is a call to action—it’s time to roll up our sleeves and address our region’s issues.”

“In 2007, we said that we believe each resident and employee should be afforded the highest possible quality of life and work experience,” said Marlene Gafrick, Plan Co-Chair. West Houston Association members want to help improve the quality of life in Greater West Houston over the next 40 years by listening, advocating, and working together.”

The West Houston Association is a non-profit organization created in 1979 by forward-thinking developers, demographers, engineers, and consultants who aimed to bring “quality growth” to Greater West Houston. The association advocates for an area of 1,000 square miles in the western portion of Harris County and parts of Ft. Bend and Waller Counties and includes the Memorial District. The Greater West Houston area absorbed 36% of the population growth of the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area between 2000 and 2015.
