HOUSTON (June 23, 2020) – Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center has been designated as a Level IV Trauma Center by the Texas Department of State Health Services after consistently demonstrating its ability to provide advanced trauma life support, evaluation, stabilization and diagnostic services.
”This designation is important to the Memorial City and surrounding community because it confirms our team’s ability to manage trauma cases as they arrive in to our hospital,” said Paul O’Sullivan, Sr. Vice President and CEO of Memorial Hermann Memorial City and Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital. “Trauma is a leading cause of preventable death and providing patients with access to high quality trauma care at a trauma center, in a timely manner, could be critical in saving a life.”
Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center is part of Memorial Hermann Health System’s integrated trauma network, the only such system in Greater Houston. The integrated trauma network, which includes Memorial Hermann Life Flight®, provides life-saving care for trauma victims before, during and after their injuries.
Level IV Trauma Centers have a team of trauma physicians and nurses available to assess the patient upon arrival. Patients that require more comprehensive care are managed and stabilized before being transferred to a Level I or Level II Trauma Center. As part of its Level IV status, Memorial Hermann Memorial City provides educational opportunities in trauma care for the community including Stop the Bleed training and fall prevention education and screening events.

The Memorial District would like to give a warm welcome to the Kirby Ice House Memorial, which opened on Thursday, June 18. This spacious bar has been in the making for a year, and has 12,000 feet of space inside and 10,000 feet of space in its backyard patio area.
Plus, Kirby Ice House Memorial has a 120-foot bar, one of the longest in the Lonestar state. It uses its big bar to offer a big selection of 100+ tap beers. The decor showcases Americana and Old Hollywood signage, which add to the overall bold, rustic ambiance.
At Kirby Ice House Memorial, the fun continues until 2 a.m. every night with state-of-the-art TVs with 75-inch screens and an audio package with top-quality speakers.
Because of its size, Kirby Ice House Memorial is an excellent place to be social while social distancing. The bar implements safety protocols to guarantee safety. Staff wear masks and gloves and check guests' temperatures upon entrance, which is available through the backyard. Kirby also uses BioProtect RTU, a water-based antimicrobial technology that shields surfaces from coronavirus for 90 days.
Kirby Ice House Memorial spaces furniture six-feet apart and provides multiple sanitizing stations. It also accepts Apple Pay and wireless credit cards, along with standard payment methods. Currently, Kirby limits party sizes to 10 people or fewer. The restrooms are fresh and large, and there are plenty of parking spaces—300 to be exact.

The stay-at-home orders surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic forced many of us to change our lifestyles and behaviors, including our eating habits, sleep patterns and exercise routines. Cooking and take-out replaced dining out. Walking or running replaced going to the gym. We spent hours each day watching TV or tethered to our phones or tablets. And the combination of stress and boredom prompted many to reach for alcohol and other coping mechanisms.
If we’ve formed new habits, which should we keep, and which should we kick? And how should we go about breaking new bad habits?
Primary care sports medicine physician Rehal Bhojani, MD, offers advice for getting back on track. Affiliated with Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute, Dr. Bhojani is the fellowship director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine program at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston, where he also serves as an assistant professor.
Dr. Bhojani says that maintaining some sort of structure is key to staying mentally and physically healthy. “Create a schedule for your day. Even if you're working at home, schedule in the time you're working from home, schedule your exercise, schedule your trip to the grocery store. You might even schedule your meals and what you're going to eat. And keep a regular sleep schedule. Even if you have nothing to do in the morning, get up at the same time as you normally would. Building a routine is going to be your best bet for keeping those quarantine bad habits out of your life,” he says.
Regular exercise is essential to your physical and mental wellbeing, says Dr. Bhojani. “If you’re not active, get outside and walk. If you’re just starting out, start slow. If you can walk for 10 minutes, take one or two 10-minute walks a day, and slowly make your way up to 30-minute walks. Follow CDC guidelines for wearing a mask and for social distancing, if those measures are in place. Walk during the daytime when it's nice. Make sure you stretch and wear proper walking shoes. If you need to break it up into two walks, do two walks. Just get out and get moving,” he suggests.
When it comes to exercise, don’t let obstacles, including weather, get in your way. “You can do things inside, such as pushups, sit-ups and jumping jacks, even during commercials while you're watching TV. If you are older, or if you have arthritis in the knees, you can do what we call stand-ups and sit-downs, where you're actually getting up off the couch and sitting back down. You can walk around your apartment or your house. Just keeping moving,” he says.
Dr. Bhojani acknowledges that maintaining healthy eating habits during the pandemic has been difficult, as nutritious foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, have been harder to come by. “Unfortunately, it’s been easier to get processed and packaged foods than it has been to get fruits and vegetables,” says Dr. Bhojani. “But choose healthier alternatives, including stomach fillers, such as lower-sodium nuts and trail mixes. Make protein shakes with frozen fruit and protein powders you can purchase online. You can even order fruits and vegetables online,” he says.
Dr. Bhojani acknowledges these are challenging times. “We don’t know what the future holds, but regardless, it’s important for all of us to try to maintain and improve our health. And we do that by creating healthy habits, like eating right, exercising, good sleeping habits and keeping a routine.”
Start creating healthy habits now. Visit memorialhermann.org or call 713-222-CARE (2273) to schedule an appointment with a physician who can help you get back on track.

Memorial District businesses have missed you. Now, many have permission to reopen under strict guidelines from Texas health officials, and they are excited to welcome you back for safe, regulated dine-in experiences, in-store shopping, and more.
Guidelines vary from business to business. For example, some service businesses will avoid providing services that take a long time. People will keep six feet apart, and staff members will sanitize workstations frequently.
Some businesses take extra precautions, such as allowing patrons to enter by appointment only. Others provide hand sanitizer for patrons to use before entering and upon leaving.
Be sure to ask restaurants if they provide meals for frontline workers, such as medical professionals. Some give customers the option to purchase an additional meal that goes directly to frontline workers.
Most companies continue to offer curbside and online services for patrons who are not ready to enter buildings. Some businesses follow a 25% occupancy rule, a guideline from the Texas government and health officials.
Visit our Business Directory to find contact information for the organizations in our district. Call ahead to learn what services and stipulations are in place.
Here are details on current hours and services from many Memorial District businesses.

As businesses cautiously reopen with limited occupancy, we encourage our community to continue to practice safety measures, such as social distancing and hand washing, to reduce the exposure to and spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. Together, we can keep our community safe and take steps forward.
May 10 through 16, we celebrate National Hospital Week 2020. This week highlights the adage “health comes first,” a motto of every hospital, health system and person involved in keeping our communities healthy. In addition, National Nurses Week, which we celebrated May 6 through 12 this year, has expanded into a month-long celebration to elevate and celebrate nursing.
#ANANursesMonth begins today! Nurses play a critical role in the health of our nation and this year's events highlight that even more. Because one week is not enough, ANA will honor nurses for the entire month of May! To learn more, click here: https://t.co/laeT5bHCvh #NNW pic.twitter.com/irwC0iFEAl

Now more than ever, we appreciate our hospitals and health care workers for the extraordinary work they put forth to support our community. The Memorial District would especially like to thank Memorial Hermann Memorial City hospital and all health care workers in our area for their commitment to caring for our community.
As the largest health system in Southeast Texas, Memorial Hermann employs nearly 9,000 nurses. Nurses at Memorial Hermann are committed to delivering innovative, safe, high quality and compassionate care to patients at each of the system’s 14 hospitals and more than 220 diagnostic and specialty centers.
Houston, these are challenging times. But in the midst of adversity, we've witnessed the power of the collective human spirit. Healthcare workers are on the frontlines of this situation. Please consider saying thank you by visiting https://t.co/SwVwYGU7jM #HoustonHealthcareHeroes pic.twitter.com/woxCRZ1iA5

“Our healthcare professionals at Memorial Hermann are always ready—every day—to help, inspire, heal and give extra support to all patients and their loved ones,” said Chuck Stokes, RN, FACHE, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Memorial Hermann.
Many Memorial Hermann facilities have received national recognition for their excellence in nursing care. For example, Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center earned a designation as a Magnet® facility, which is one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can receive.
We want to acknowledge and thank our nurses for their selfless actions and unwavering dedication to our patients—today and everyday. Happy #NursesWeek to these healthcare heroes: https://t.co/dv7yzENkGj. pic.twitter.com/dSKX6Tszvx
— Memorial Hermann (@memorialhermann) May 6, 2020
“National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week provide us with a special time to celebrate the incredible impact our nurses, physicians, administrators, staff and volunteers have on care delivery and, ultimately, the success of our system. We salute those who make us who we are,” said Stokes.
Want to help Houston health care workers? Consider buying them a meal from one of the restaurants here in the Memorial District. Use our Business Directory to get the contact information for your favorite restaurant, and then call and ask if there is a program for buying frontline workers a meal.

Mom’s favorite cuisines are in the Memorial District. Our restaurants can help you make a Mother’s Day meal. Churrascos, for example, can bring the flavor of South America to your dining room. Get a Mother’s Day family pack to serve up to 6 people.

Eddie V’s at CityCentre has surf-n-turf for Mother’s Day. Get a four-course meal with heating instructions. This selection includes Gulf shrimp as a starter, herb-roasted beef tenderloin and Chilean sea bass as entrées, and bananas foster as a dessert. It even has a set of chocolate-dipped strawberries and a long-stemmed rose for Mom.

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar at Town and Country Village has a three-course meal with filet mignon and lobster.

Maggiano’s Little Italy can provide the classic Italian-American your mom loves. Its Mother’s Day deal is a five-course cold-prepped meal for the family and includes meatballs, chicken piccata, and fettucine alfredo. Call 713-461-0692 to order.

The Capital Grille offers Mother’s Day deals. Get freshly baked lemon blueberry bread or seeded French rolls, a Spring greens salad, and one of several entrees—such as roasted beef tenderloin and butter-poached North Atlantic lobster tails. Round out the meal with specialty mashed potatoes or French green beans, and finish up with chocolate espresso cake. Plus, Mom gets her own set of lemon tea cookies.

Give the wow factor with a “MOM” cake from Sweet in one of four flavors—strawberry, classic almond, chocolate, or s’mores. Smalls feed 6–8 people, while larges feed 12–16 people. Email order@ilovesweet.com to pre-order, or call 832-323-2931.

The Mother’s Day collection by Altar’d State has quirky mugs and tumblers, pleasant travel perfumes, keychains, and body creams. Plus, at the time of this article’s publication, you can get 40% off when you shop online.

Does Mom love a pop of print, or does she prefer faded seaside hues? Either way, J. McLaughlin at Town and Country Village has a gift idea in its online gallery for Mother’s Day. The store curated gifts for all moms, whether they dream of someday living on an island or think a wicker bag is all you need come summertime.

Lush can give an at-home spa experience with natural products, such as body scrubs and facial cleansers that are safe to use during pregnancy. Plus, gift from Lush comes with a side of the warm and fuzzies. Lush is fighting the spread of COVID-19. For example, it sent thousands of soaps and supplies to frontline workers. Consider a gift card or an online purchase from Lush to surprise mom and help others.

Every day is the right day to appreciate moms and maternal figures everywhere. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
April is Stress Awareness Month. As many people continue to stay home, it’s important to combat stress to maintain our physical and mental health. Here are some valuable resources:

Mental stress can result in physical health problems. If you need help finding a doctor to help manage stress, try the Zocdoc app to find a provider. Memorial Hermann has a list of virtual clinic options. Click here for additional resources.
Talk therapy may be especially helpful right now. Try apps Better Help and Talkspace for mental health matters that seem manageable from home, or contact Memorial Hermann Mental Health Crisis Clinic locations about complex concerns.

Meditation is a good practice to adopt anytime. The Calm app provides audio content for meditation, relaxation and sleep. This includes bedtime stories for adults. The soothing programs may help reduce anxiety and stress. Similarly, the Stop, Breathe, and Think app first asks the listener to consider his or her emotions, and then provides mindful practices tailored to the listener’s state of mind.
The UCLA Mindful App has wellness meditations for people dealing with a health condition. It also provides tutorial videos to help participants improve their meditation postures and practices. The 10% Happier app offers expert guided meditations and teachings.
Memorial Hermann Prevention and Recovery Center (PaRC) is a resource for questions about alcoholism, drug addiction, and dual diagnosis.

While gyms and fitness centers are closed, you can access online fitness opportunities in the Memorial District. The Bar Method, Life Time Fitness, the Memorial City Club, and Revolution Studio offer courses you can download, or stream live for reasonable rates. Athleta offers online workouts, yoga and meditation sessions during its weekday #HomeBodies Power Hour at 4 p.m. on Instagram Live. Contact Athleta at 713-463-8847 for details.

Take your mind off of stressful things by enjoying indoor activities. Play board games and cards games. Put together a jigsaw puzzle. Join an online book club or listen to soothing music. Focus on arts-and-crafts projects. Memorial District shops can get supplies to you when you order online for curbside pickup or delivery.

How about trying an online meetup group to connect with people who share some of your interests? Some Meetup.com groups in the Memorial District now gather over remote conferencing services like FaceTime, Skype and Zoom.
Take time to maintain your health and wellness during Stress Awareness Month and every day.
These days, it is more important than ever for us to have an exercise routine to reduce stress and stay healthy. Even though gyms and workout facilities in the Memorial District are temporarily closed, most offer other ways for members and people in the community to keep fit.
The Bar Method and Revolution Studio each have livestream workout sessions that are easy to access at home through popular apps such as Zoom and Vimeo. Even if you are not a member, per-class prices might still be friendly for your budget.
If you would like to try the Bar Method's classes first before you make a commitment, opt for the 14-day trial. After the first two weeks comes to an end, you can get a 3-month membership starting at $55, or you can pay $19 monthly. Check out this interview from the Bar Method:
Over at Revolution Studio, each livestream class costs $14. Plus, they give you 7 days to redeem this coupon once you sign up, so you can get started when it's right for your schedule. Here's a video to give you an idea of what you might expect from the yoga classes:
Some online classes use special equipment, such as a bicycle or a trampoline, but the studios also offer ideas on substitutes for people at home who may not have these items. For most classes, all you’ll need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Take a look at this class from Revolution Studio to get an idea:
Additionally, the Memorial City Club offers virtual classes for its members, and Life Time Fitness offers its most popular classes on demand. Be sure to check out the options available at both of these great gyms.
While we observe the stay-at-home order, we don’t have to give up our exercise routine. Keep fit, stay safe, and be healthy!
Memorial City has been moving quickly to respond to coronavirus. Your help is needed to get essential supplies into the hands of the first responders and medical professionals who need them most.
Participate by bringing new and unused supplies from the list below to the Memorial City Medical Supply Donation Drive. The drive will take place at Memorial City Mall’s west entrance near American Girl and Ice Skate Memorial City from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on:
The new and unused supplies we will be accepting are:
These supplies will help to protect west Houston hospitals and healthcare workers during this challenging time. Please keep in mind that Memorial City staff will still be following social distancing guidelines and therefore will be offering curbside drop-off exclusively, but Memorial City attendants will be on-site to give assistance.
Memorial City attendants will also be accepting $20 gift cards from the Memorial City restaurants listed below. These will go straight to healthcare professionals working in west Houston. Get a gift card by requesting them as part of your next delivery or take-out order. Then donate it during the Memorial City Medical Supply Donation Drive.
If you or someone you know has access to items from the list of supplies and can donate them, please consider participating in the drive or sharing word of the event. Remember that we are all in this together, and your Memorial District will be here with you every step of the way.
