Worried about driving during heavy rain and flooding conditions? Houston TranStar has an app to help. The Roadway Flooding Warning System app shows real-time traffic data and measures roadway flooding risks during heavy rainfall.
With hurricane season heating up, Houston TranStar urges people to download and use the new app. The project began in response to Hurricane Harvey, and the data expands weekly.
In 2019, the app showed 76 sensors. Today, it gets real-time data from almost 300 weather sensors that alert travelers to roadway flooding risks in Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, Brazoria, and Galveston counties.
Dinah Massie, Executive Director for Houston TranStar, explained the advantages of developing the app's capabilities.
"Expanding the Roadway Flood Warning System's footprint into counties adjacent to Harris allows us to warn even more people about potentially dangerous roadway flooding," Massie said. "Information collected by this highly accurate technology is overlaid on the TranStar Traffic Map and mobile application. We're warning motorists about flood risk and also helping emergency crews respond more quickly and safely during heavy rainfall."
The application is the result of a collaboration between Houston TranStar, the Harris County Flood Control District, and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.
The Harris County Flood Control District, the Brazoria Drainage District, the City of Sugar Land, Fort Bend County, the Galveston Drainage District, Waller County, and the San Jacinto River Authority maintain the sensors, which increase the capacity to monitor water levels for possible local street inundation throughout TranStar's region.

Sun and Ski Sports sells bikes and provides Bicycle Blue Book Trade-Ins, so you could bring your old bike and leave with a new one. It offers bike services from tune-ups with adjustments and inspections to overhauls with part installations. Not ready to buy? Rent from Houston BCycle. Local non-profit Houston Bike Share runs this bike share at Pearl CityCentre. It strives to give Houston equal access to bikes for fitness, fun, and mobility. Pay by credit card at a kiosk or secure a bicycle from the mobile app. The bikes have a timer that stops when you return them to a station in the Houston BCycle network. Walk-up rides are $3 for 30 minutes, but members get extra perks. For example, members ride for free for the first 60 minutes of each trip. A monthly membership is $13 and includes unlimited trips, while an annual membership is $79 and covers unlimited trips, a free RFID card, and access to BCycle stations in other cities. Safety is an essential part of biking. Now, there are new precautions to take because of coronavirus. First, wear a bicycle helmet at all times. If an accident occurs, a helmet might save your life. Next, keep safe with other protective gear as well, such as elbow pads and knee pads. Then, bring gloves and a face mask to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
