Make It a Happy Father’s Day with Help from the Memorial District

It’s time to show Dad some extra love and appreciation, and the Memorial District is the perfect place to do it! We have everything you need right here in the District, including great gifts, memorable dining experiences, and events the whole family can enjoy. Read on for some fabulous Father’s Day ideas.

If your dad loves sports, treat him to a new jersey or his favorite team’s ball cap from Academy Sports and Outdoors (9734 Katy Fwy). If he’s an avid outdoorsman, he will surely enjoy the latest hunting, fishing, or camping gear as he prepares for summertime adventures, so pay a visit to Fishing Tackle Unlimited (10303 Katy Fwy), too.

Speaking of upcoming adventures, we think the men’s collection by Brahmin is a great place to find bags that can function as an airplane carry-on, a weekend carryall, or an office tote. The versatile Beckett tote is always impressive, whether Dad uses it for vacation or in the office. Find a variety of wallets, travel bags, business bags, and backpacks at the retailer’s CITYCENTRE location (796 Town and Country Blvd., Suite 110).

Coach (740 Memorial City Way) offers classic wallets, briefcases, duffel bags, and more that will make any dad’s day. A timeless fragrance, like Coach for Men eau de Toilette, is sure to be a hit. You can also find some unexpected items like an Apple watch strap, slide-on slippers for lounging by the pool, or even a leather jacket.

Then, you could pick out Father’s Day treats from Three Brothers Bakery (12393 Kingsride Lane). Stay on the holiday theme with their deliciously humorous cupcakes decorated with a mustache or a shirt and tie made of frosting. Or, if Dad has a favorite sweet treat, choose from their everyday menu of scrumptious breads, cakes, cookies, and pies. They even sell their own hand-roasted coffee beans, which are the perfect gift for every coffee-lover dad.

Does Dad like to whip up his own creations? At Williams Sonoma (12850 Memorial Dr.), you can find specialty kitchenware for dads who enjoy wearing the chef’s hat and being a grill master. If Dad loves to grill, get him stainless-steel skewers, high-heat nonstick cookware, or a top-quality grill brush. Or go all in this year and get him his very own outdoor pizza oven or Traeger Timberline grill.

Alternatively, you could skip the kitchenware and put together a well-deserved home-cooked meal just for him. Williams Sonoma’s test kitchen menu has a ton of great recipes for dishes like Skillet Spoon Bread and Pork Sliders with Cherry Compote. These dishes could complement some of the great steaks over at Omaha Steaks (650 West Bough Lane).

If Dad is a meat lover, take him to Texas de Brazil (822 Town and Country Blvd) for a delicious gaucho churrasco he will never forget. Be sure to arrive hungry because this upscale Brazilian steakhouse offers a wide range of all-you-can-eat meat, including marinated pork, lamb picanha, filet mignon, and braised beef ribs. There also is a chef-crafted salad bar and authentic Brazilian dishes like feijoada black beans. Finish the meal with a decadent dessert like the Brazilian papaya cream.

If you and Dad would like to spend some extra quality time together, combine a great Father’s Day meal with a hotel stay at The Moran Hotel at 800 Sorella Court in CITYCENTRE. When you book their “STEAKation” staycation deal, Dad gets a $100 gift card to use at Capital Grille (840 W Sam Houston Pkwy N), Eddie V’s (12848 Queensbury Lane), Seasons 52 (842 W Sam Houston Pkwy N) or Yard House (800 Sorella Court). All these restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel. He will feel like a king all night. Click here to book a reservation he is sure to love.

The Memorial District always has fun activities and events to enjoy, too. For example, you could kick off Father’s Day weekend on Friday, June 17, with “Live! On The Lawn” at Memorial City Mall, where you and Dad can enjoy some live music and peruse the Shops Under the Arbor vendors. Food and drinks from Ciro’s Italian Grill (9755 Katy Fwy) will be available for purchase while you sit back, relax, and enjoy songs by musician Chase Demaster. Don’t forget to swing by the Memorial City table at the event to sign up for your chance to win a $100 gift card to Ciro’s.

Last but certainly not least, you and Dad could catch one of this year’s most highly anticipated summer blockbusters like “Jurassic World: Dominion,” “Lightyear,” or “Elvis.” Just look through the showtimes at Cinemark Memorial City(310 Memorial City Way) or Studio Movie Grill (822 Town and Country Blvd), where Dad can sip on this month’s featured drink, the Don Julio Anejo Margarita, a blend of Don Julio Anejo, Grand Marnier, agave nectar and freshly squeezed lime juice served on the rocks with a salt rim.

With the shops, restaurants, cinemas, and special events right here in the Memorial District, you and Dad are sure to have a fun-filled Father’s Day!

Or patronize Grimaldi's Pizzeria, where they offer 15% to service members, veterans, and retirees every single day of the year. Top it off with a little something sweet! Deliver warm cookies in special Mother’s Day packaging from Tiff’s Treats or a pick up a special desert from the incomparable Three Brothers Bakery.

There are endless ways to say “I love you” and, no matter her style, spending quality time surely tops every Mom’s list. This Mother’s Day weekend, bring Mom to the Houston Orchid Society’s Annual Show and Sale at Memorial City Mall, where she will be able to browse exquisite exhibits featuring orchids, orchid arrangements, corsages, and orchid collectables. Not too long ago, Black Friday took place one day each year on the day after Thanksgiving. Retailers heavily promoted big sales, and consumers knew they would find bargains on large and coveted items. Shopping malls filled to the brim with early Christmas shoppers and those who braved large crowds to score items, such as TVs.
Now, retailers and shoppers recognize the entire month of November as a Black Friday sales event, dubbed Black November. In other words, November is the new Black (Friday). From Home Depot to Dillard’s, Black Friday sales are well underway and will take place all month long. Making a jack-o-lantern is a great way to show creativity and seasonal spirit in the fall. In the Memorial District, find the perfect pumpkin and the supplies to make this decoration, and add Halloween flair to your home for the spooky season.

First, decide how your jack-o-lantern will look. Will it be cute, funny, or frightening? A traditional jack-o-lantern has triangle eyes and a silly smile or scary grin with teeth that are big and goofy or sharp and spooky. However, there are no rules. Make the jack-o-lantern that is right for you.

Keep the design ideas in mind as you shop Memorial District retailers for supplies. For example, plan to carve standard triangle eyes and a smile with teeth, or jazz up your jack-o-lantern with stencils at craft or stationery stores in the community. For example, add shooting stars and crescent moons with stencils from Joann.

Next, find pumpkins at HEB Bunker Hill or Randalls on Memorial Drive. You may even see pumpkins for sale at the Memorial City Fall Fest and Market on October 17, 2021. This event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will have food trucks, hayrides, live music, food, and drinks. Plus, there will be a pumpkin patch the benefits Epilepsy Foundation Texas. Have fun and keep an eye out for the perfect pumpkin to become your jack-o-lantern.

Look for a pumpkin with a smooth side that will make for a good canvas. Then, at home, wash the pumpkin and make sure there is no dirt or debris. Dry it with an old towel.

Although you could use stencils and markers to draw lines directly on the pumpkin, a better solution might be to draw your design on a piece of paper, tape the paper to the pumpkin, and poke holes along the lines of your drawing with a strong needle or a screwdriver. Then, use a carving knife to cut a round hole at the top of the pumpkin, which will create a lid. Removing the lid will give you access to the insides, which you can scoop out with a serrated spoon. All of these supplies come ready in the Masters Collection Pumpkin Decorating Carving Kit at Home Depot on Lumpkin Road. Just make sure an adult handles all the carving tools and responsibilities. If a child wants to participate, perhaps they can paint a jack-o-lantern face on a pumpkin with paint from Joann.

Finally, add a small lit candle inside your jack-o-lantern. Try a seasonal scented candle like the Heirloom Pumpkin Tin Candle from Francesca’s at either Memorial City Mall or Town and Country Village to take the October spirit up a notch.

If all this sounds like too much work and you would prefer to buy a jack-o-lantern to have from season to season, check out the black metal jack-o-lanterns from Pottery Barn at 12850 Memorial Drive. They’re cute and spooky at the same time, which is pretty much what Halloween is all about after all.

We hope you can carve out a little time for yourself to have some gourd old-fashioned fun!

Memorial District retailers have rolled out the red carpet for fall fashion this year. This season brings orange, amber, and neutral tones into the mix along with faux leather textures, and let's not forget the shacket—a cross between a jacket and a shirt. Some call it an overshirt. It is excellent for layering, especially in Houston's mild fall weather.

In fashion this fall, we expect to see billowy blouses tucked into straight-legged jeans, sporting the newer loose fit. Trends will include neutral-toned shackets in patterns or solid colors paired with faux leather skirts and a neutral bodysuit, and knee-high boots have made a comeback this season, along with booties in different textures and colors. Jewel-toned sweatsuits can pair with an ankle-length shacket and the neutral-colored Nike Jordans or Air Force 1s. Military boots paired with skirts, button-down shirts, and soft floral patterns have been seen on all the runways this season. Doctor Marten shoes make for a classic, comfy fit, allowing you to put your spin on a utilitarian boot.

Anything Bling, located in Town and Country Village, is well stocked on everything for fall fashion. They are a one-stop-shop for everything you need to update your wardrobe, including boots, jewelry, coats, and dresses. Choose from green, and earth-toned sweaters with flounced cut-off sleeves, perfectly paired with your favorite denim, booties, or mules. Shop for blouses in amber and blue hues with puffed or ruched sleeves, perfect for a day in the office or date night.

Hemline, located in CITYCENTRE, offers jewel-toned dresses perfect for date night, paired with booties, and are sure to be a hit this season. Pop in to shop the latest fall fashion finds, such as earth-toned shackets and neutral-colored skirts.

Saige & Rose in Memorial City Mall has your next date night or girls' night out outfit ready for your choosing. Select from earth-toned blazer dresses to satin button-down dresses, perfect for your next occasion. Are you looking for more textured pieces? Shop for ruched faux leather skirts that can go with booties and a black top. It'll be your next go-to outfit for fun!

Visit Marlo Miller Boutique on Kingsride Lane across from Memorial Hermann for a casual bohemian and western chic touch.

When you think of fall, you may think of Halloween candy or pumpkin spice, but the fall is also the perfect time to celebrate one of America’s favorite desserts: cookies!

Want to enjoy National Homemade Cookie Day on October 1? Check out this fantastic recipe for marbled chocolate chip cookies from Williams Sonoma, where you can also get the right kitchenware to help you bake.

Be sure to check out their recipe for chocolate crinkle cookies.

Then, everyone should have a fabulous recipe for chocolate chip cookies like these.

If you’re looking for nearly homemade cookies—that’s all right too. In the Memorial District, there are many places to find the perfect cookie. First, head over to Three Brothers Bakery because you can really go nuts with the cookies.

And because you can bring out your inner Cookie Monster.

And because there are few things in life as good as a chocolate chip cookie and a glass of cold milk.

Cookies can be the perfect dessert, and everyone has a favorite. Maybe yours is a classic chocolate chip or a sweet and salty peanut butter. Or maybe you prefer a traditional oatmeal raisin like they have at Salata.

Remember, cookies come in different shapes and sizes. For example, over at the Great American Cookie in Memorial City Mall, you can pick out a big cookie cake to cut like a pizza and share with friends and family on a special occasion like someone’s birthday.

At Tiff’s Treats, you can get the sweets delivered right to your door, or you can be a sweetie and send someone cookies by delivery.

Tiff’s Treats also makes it easy to frost your own cookies in the spirit of National Homemade Cookie Day.

Also, Tiff’s Treats wants you to remember that cookies pair fantastically well with a bowl of ice cream. This is definitely something we can support!

Plus, here in the Memorial District, you will find some of the best ice cream shops in Houston, Texas, like Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at CITYCENTRE.

Is fitness on the forefront of your mind? Maybe your homemade cookie treat can be a little different. Check out the Ghost whey protein at the Vitamin Shoppe in the Memorial District. They have Chips A’Hoy and Oreo flavors, and they are incredibly good.

Whether you want to make your own cookies on National Homemade Cookie Day or just enjoy a batch of tasty cookies from a Memorial District shop, we hope you have a sweet day!
