When I was younger, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Drive bus visited my school almost every year. I wanted to donate but never could because I did not meet the weight requirement. Fast-forward ten years, healthy and ready to donate, I stood at the Blood Drive bus outside Memorial City Mall. I was excited to donate, and I knew I could make a difference in someone else's life.
Inside the spacious bus, I met Octavia. She was one of the nurses in charge of making sure I had answered the questionnaire. Octavia was informative and sweet. I told her it was my first time, and I felt like a little kid as I spoke. The process before donating blood is educational. To make sure your blood is usable, the team asks many questions about your health. Octavia pricked my middle finger and took a small amount of blood to test it for iron levels. My level came out normal for my age and weight. As a gift for donating, you receive socks or a T-shirt. I asked Octavia if I would be able to know my blood type. I did not know my blood type, and I had always wondered about it. She informed me that the information would be available by downloading the Digital Donor app and waiting 24 hours for the details to process.
I waited in a small sitting area in the back of the bus. Donors occupied all four areas. Some donors sat for longer than others. I learned that you could donate more than a pint if you wanted.
A nurse walked over and checked my left arm for a strong vein when it was my turn. The nurse commented, "Oh, good! You have nice veins."
"It's my first time," I said.
"You don't have to look at the needle if you don't want," she said.
"Actually, I'm rather fond of watching for some reason," I said.
The nurse laughed at my curiosity and said, "I am about to put the needle in."
In length, the needle was half the size of a coffee stirrer and about the same width. I will admit that I panicked when I saw the width.
"Take a deep breath," the nurse said, and in went the needle. I can't say that it wasn't uncomfortable; it was. But it wasn't significantly painful. It was like a hard pinch. The bag was full within five minutes, and then they took a couple of test tubes full of blood to run some tests. The pint-sized bag leveled and then filled to the brim once more.
After ten minutes, the nurse walked over and said, "I'm going to take the needle out now. Take deep breaths."
The removal of the needle was more uncomfortable than when it went in. The nurse put gauze and pressure over my vein and proceeded to wrap it in a red-gauze band.
"Okay, you're all set," she said. "If you're not lightheaded, you can leave. Otherwise you can sit for 15 minutes. Just make sure to get up slowly when you're ready."
"I think I'm okay," I said. I got up slowly, and thankfully, no lightheadedness surprised me.
Overall, it was an excellent experience! A blood donation, which takes just 15 minutes, can save three lives! So, I'll be donating every chance I can. Look for upcoming blood drives in the Memorial District, and be sure to check out the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's website to set up your appointment and donate!

Fishing is a big sport in the Houston area. If you are an avid fishing lover, you have hopefully found Fishing Tackle Unlimited (FTU).

Fishing Tackle Unlimited (FTU) is a Houston-based fishing tackle/marine accessory retailer. It was founded in 1979 under its original name, Cut Rate Sporting Goods, by two Houston native brothers, Joe and Danny Meyer. The 30,000 square foot Memorial District store at 10303 Katy Freeway opened in 1984. It is a one-stop shop for any of your fishing needs, from equipment to apparel to accessories.

Their mission is to provide all fishing enthusiasts with the best quality and selection of tackle and gear through courteous, competent, and professional service in an impeccably comfortable, clean, and secure atmosphere that will encourage customer satisfaction.

And if you were thinking about putting away your fishing equipment for the fall, think again. Autumn can be the best fishing time of the year. Many lakes become stocked up on largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, pike, perch, muskie, and crappie. If you’re still looking to do saltwater fishing, casting your line could catch you some speckled trout, redfish, flounder, king mackerel, and yellowfin tuna. Be sure to get in on the fall catch before the winter season settles in!

Fishing Tackle Unlimited is the largest independent dealer for Shimano, Simms, Costa Del Mar, Daiwa, Jackson, and many more brands. Their fly department is equipped with experienced fly fishers. In addition, if you are looking for Blue Water, Trolling Motors Sales, service and installation, rod building, tackles, lures, bait, leader lines, kayak sails and rigging, fishing apparel, and gear for hot and cold weather, Fishing Tackle Unlimited is the place to go. They can outfit the largest of sportfishing boats.

Fishing Tackle Unlimited will hold its Annual Inshore Expo, Saturday, December 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They will have casting, fly-tying demonstrations, seminars, and more. For more information about the event, follow FTU on Facebook or Instagram @fishingtackleunlimited or call 713-827-7762.

Houston Restaurant Weeks is back with new features, foods, and restaurants just for you. The annual event, which benefits the Houston Food Bank, runs from August 1 through Labor Day on September 6. Restaurants that participate in the event will offer set menus, and the proceeds of each meal will cover donations of $1 to $5 for the Houston Food Bank.

Many restaurants here in the Memorial District will participate in the event and provide fabulous foods from a wide range of cuisines and cultures. Here in the Memorial District, you can visit restaurants like Liberty Kitchen and State Fare in the Memorial City Mall area and Cyclone Anaya's in the CITYCENTRE area. The first batch of menus is live and ready for you to see at the link at the end of this article. As of now, there are about 110 restaurants on the list, but Houston Restaurant Weeks expects about 200 restaurants to participate. The program will update its website as more and more businesses sign up to participate before the first day of the event.

Houston Restaurant Weeks has raised nearly $17 million to combat hunger in Houston since the establishment of the citywide dining event in 2003. By encouraging Houstonians to support their favorite eateries and try out new restaurants, the event has helped boost business for local restaurant owners, employ area restaurant workers, support the city’s economy, and keep hungry people fed and happy.

Last summer, Houston Restaurant Weeks stepped up to the plate—pun intended—to make sure Houstonians could find great meals and support one another during the pandemic. The program helped businesses inform the community of new dine-in, takeout, and curbside options. This year, you may still see some of the modifications Houston Restaurant Weeks introduced last summer.

You may also notice updates on the event’s website and social media messaging. For example, the event now showcases takeout options with #HRWToGo menus. Plus, there is a new online portal on the website where restaurants can input and update menus directly and in real-time and create printable versions to use at the restaurant. The event plans to continue to make improvements in the coming years.

When Cleverley Stone, founder of Houston Restaurant Weeks, passed away last year, her daughter, Katie Stone, took over the leadership position.

“We are thrilled at the excitement restaurants have expressed about this year’s HRW. 2021 is off to a great start, and we anticipate diners will be quick to make reservations and get a place at the table,” said Katie Stone, president of the Cleverley Stone Foundation.
