Give a warm welcome to the Memorial District's newest restaurant, KP's Kitchen, an elegant bistro that serves American fare for Houston's food lovers. This impressive eatery uses fresh, local ingredients and offers counter and table service.

KP's Kitchen is in a prime spot between the Village Cobbler and Orange Theory Fitness, across from Beautique Salon. Conceptualizing the business, KP thought about European bistros where guests were like family and owners engaged in the process.

Owner Kerry "KP" Pauly gained experience at other popular Houston establishments before beginning the restaurant. The Memorial District was a perfect fit for Pauly's venture because his family lives in the area, and his children attend Memorial Middle School. Pauly created KP's Kitchen to give Houston families a place to gather and make memories over delectable meals.

"I wanted to create an upscale environment people could visit after tennis or after a wedding—a place where all are welcome," Pauly said.

Signature dishes include highlights like KP's Bistro Burger and KP's Crab Cakes. The chicken is of the highest quality and always tender, and the filet mignon is certified Angus beef. For dessert, try the double chocolate chip cookies. Furthermore, while KP's Kitchen obtains its beer-and-wine license, the restaurant is BYOB with a reasonable corkage fee per table.

"Wherever possible, we try to support local businesses, such as Thirdborn Ginger Beer," Pauly said. "Also, local artists often supply our art, including calligraphy from a high school student at Memorial High School." Speaking of supporting local business, the KP's Kitchen menu includes Gulf Red Snapper with tomato-brown butter, a meal with seafood from local fishmonger Blue Horizon.

In addition to providing the Memorial District with fantastic dishes, the restaurant strives to give back to the community through local school spirit nights and raising awareness of important causes and organizations, such as Books for Kids.

"I always wanted to own a restaurant that could give back to the community," Pauly said, "And I wanted to create the perfect, approachable bistro here in the Memorial District."

Launching a restaurant always involves a focus on health and safety, and nowadays, the bar has been raised. Fortunately, KP's Kitchen knows how to help guests enjoy a delicious meal in a safe, upscale restaurant experience.

"We hope to create a culture where safety and sanitation are top priorities along with gratitude," Pauly said. "We want guests to know we are available for all their dining, take-out, and catering needs, and we are thankful they chose our space to celebrate their life moments. We are excited to become the Memorial District's neighborhood bistro and can hardly wait to meet everyone!"

The Memorial District’s newest hotel, Holiday Inn Express, just opened its doors and is already a success. Conveniently located at 10500 Katy Freeway, it has 123 rooms and approximately 2,000 square feet of meeting and pre function space. Amenities include a pool, outside patio with TVs, and a coffee bar.

Alif Maredia, president and owner of PA Hospitality, chose this location based upon its proximity to the Memorial District and all that it has to offer. “We want to be here in this location, and we wanted to go above and beyond with a strong upper mid-scale hotel,” said Maredia. “We have invested in additional luxurious amenities that go above and beyond the standards of Holiday Inn Express to stay on brand with the other premium hotels in the Memorial District.” “Our hotel includes luxury bedding, higher end furnishings, vibrant lighting around the building, and a larger pool area with ambient lighting and a covered patio.”

With quality meeting space, free parking, and internet, the hotel will meet the demands of business travel and accommodate visitors to the area. Business travelers enjoy the hotel surroundings of the many upscale restaurants, shopping, team building activities, and places to socialize after a busy day with clients.

It is already a popular venue for guests attending tournaments at the nearby Baseball USA facility. With reasonable room rates and upscale amenities, the new Holiday Inn Express is a great addition to the Memorial District.

February is Heart Health Awareness Month. This year, there are more considerations than usual around heart health. According to cardiologist Razvan Dadu, MD, at Memorial Hermann Medical Group Comprehensive Heart Care, COVID-19 affects cardiovascular health. Dadu indicates in an article for Memorial Hermann that people should pay attention to heart health, especially after age 50 and in the pandemic. He outlines concerns, such as weight, nutrition and fitness, blood pressure, and habits.
"Increased body weight increases the risk of hypertension, or high blood pressure, and diabetes," Dadu says, reminding readers of the benefits of a healthy diet and regular fitness routine to balance body weight. He recommends 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a day, which can mean different things. "Brisk walking, swimming, or mowing the lawn involve aerobic exercise, which has been shown to help maintain, and even improve, your heart health."
The benefits of moderate activity include the reduction of blood pressure and cholesterol levels. When these points go unchecked, they lead to larger issues like atherosclerosis. On the other hand, when people eat well and work out, they increase their lifespan and enjoy each day more. Not smoking helps, too.
"Having a cardiologist who knows your health and family history can help you manage these risk factors and intervene before cardiovascular disease becomes severe," Dadu says. Unfortunately, some heart patients who worry about contracting COVID-19 at a health clinic or hospital have stopped visiting cardiologists during the pandemic. Dadu urges people to put their worries aside and seek medical care for heart health. Hospitals like Memorial Hermann here in the Memorial District take every precaution to reduce coronavirus spread, so it is important to keep appointments and continue focusing on heart health.
"The best thing to do is to avoid contracting COVID-19," Dadu said about keeping your heart healthy and strong during the pandemic. Some of his broader recommendations for health and safety in February and during but also pandemic may sound familiar. He encourages people to follow guidelines from the CDC and other health officials, wear a face mask in public, keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others, and wash their hands frequently and thoroughly. Then, report new symptoms to healthcare providers. "That's the best way to protect your heart."

The Memorial District's newest casual bar celebrates the cowboy surfer culture through drinks, eats, live music, and art. At 827 Frostwood Drive near Memorial City, Cowboy Surfer takes inspiration from North America's fleeting cowboy surfer culture, which people saw in the '60s in places where ranch life met coastal life, like the Texas Gulf Coast, Southern California, Oregon, and the Florida panhandle. Cowboy and surfer-inspired beverages, Texas comfort food, and live music from singers and songwriters near and far are on the menu of the 1,850 square-foot space full of  thematic photographs, art, and memorabilia from local and nationally-recognized artists. The bar is co-owned and operated by lawyer, businessman, and music lover Jim Jard; designer and F.E.E.D. TX Restaurant Group restaurateur Carl Eaves; and Jack Massing, who is one half of The Art Guys' creative genius.

"This bar has been a long time coming. There's certainly a lot of thought and passion behind it," says Eaves. "Meanwhile, it's meant to be an uber casual, laid-back respite from the hectic Houstonian life. Our hope is that people walk in, let out a sigh of relief and bask in the intimate environment."
The beverage menu is a mix of classic and modern cocktails. Standouts include:
Cowboy Pura Vida Almeda Margarita — Pura Vida tequila, triple sec, Big Red, frozen, and served icy cold
Campfire Coffee — mezcal, coffee liquor, chocolate bitters
Baja Beach Beer — Vodka, orange juice, lime, ginger beer, jalapeño topped with surfer light beer
There is also an enviable selection of mezcal, tequila, and whiskey. On the food side, simple comfort food reigns. Chef and friend of the group Lance Fegen consulted on the small menu featuring Texas chili, a cheeseburger, and nachos.
Live music plays a central role at the bar, anchored on the Cowboy Surfer Small Stage. The stage is small but mighty, boasting a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, plus mics and top-of-the-line guitars plugged in and ready to play.
"Our desire is to promote high quality musicians we believe in. No matter how small or large the name of the act, we want people to know that the musicians at Cowboy Surfer are hand-picked for their talent. The public can always expect a good show. Musicians, on the other hand, can expect an environment designed for them to be appreciated," says Jard.
The bar's artistic angle doesn't end with live music; as with any establishment bearing Eaves' name, Cowboy Surfer's design comes from a thorough plan. A bright blue hue reminiscent of the ocean splashes across the bar's main room, while a subdued yellow color nodding to the desert covers most of the rest of the space, including an intimate dart room dubbed The Green Room. Throughout, artwork relevant to both cowboy and surfer communities—curated by Massing—are on display. This art includes memorabilia, posters, prints, photography, vinyl records, and personal items from famous creators like Kenny Braun, Geoff Winningham, Jack Thompson, Mark Seliger, and Carlos Hernandez. Musician and actor Ryan Bingham and master surfboard creator Henry Fry are just some of the contributors of the items found at Cowboy Surfer.
"Visitors to the bar will enjoy the wide range of quality art and memorabilia that visually tie together the worlds of hard work and freedom while listening to the music that captures the spirit of Texas and the west," says Massing.
With the pandemic in full force in Texas and beyond, the Cowboy Surfer team is taking many precautions to ensure that its opening phase is as safe as possible. While current state mandates allow for bars to be open at 75% capacity, Cowboy Surfer caps its capacity at 50% or 50 people at a time. All team members will be fully masked and continually cleaning and sanitizing common surfaces. Most notably, plans for weekly live music shows are on pause.
Happy Hour Specials
Cowboy Surfer is open for happy hour Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Enjoy the following fabulous specials.
$1 off wells, margaritas, draft beer
$7 house red and white wine
Super Football Sunday
Through February 7, Cowboy Surfer opens at 11 a.m. on Sundays for Houstonians' NFL game-watching pleasure! Guests can sit back and enjoy the games on an 80-inch projector and two TVs at the cozy bar while enjoying the following all-day specials.

Is getting more sleep part of your New Year’s resolution? Fortunately, Memorial District businesses specialize in helping people get a good night’s sleep. Whether you need a new sleep mask, a new mattress, cozy hotel stays, or something in between, the Memorial District can help.

Don’t underestimate the power of a good sleep mask. One of the best sleep masks is a budget-conscious sleep mask from HEB. Whether you get this UHealth Sleep Mask for $4 from HEB or this Manta Sleep COOL Mask for $30 from Urban Outfitters, having an eye mask cover your eyes during the night will help you reach the deepest levels of sleep.

If you don’t have the right mattress, you’re never going to get the deep, rejuvenating sleep your body deserves. Sleep Number Memorial City can help you figure out precisely what kind of mattress is right for you and connect you with an adjustable and responsive mattress. Head to Mattress Firm to find mattresses, bed frames, and pillows.

You spend a third of your life in bed, so be indulgent and make sure your bedding represents your mood. Are you someone who winds down best in a room with muted colors? Do dark colors do the trick? Maybe you like to change things up from season to season, and a floral print would help you feel best in the coming months, especially if it’s on airy organic cotton sateen like this Holly Organic Cotton Duvet Cover from Anthropologie CITYCENTRE.

Or how Pottery Barn’s plant-dyed bedding made with TENCEL™ fibers?

Pottery Barn also has resources to help you plan a room makeover. For instance, they partnered with Sherwin Williams to develop color palette ideas for spring and summer of this year.

Lovesac has gorgeous “sactionals,” adaptable sofas you can modify on days when you decide to move furniture around to create a new look in your living room. Arguably, their standout products are their sacs, which look like luxurious bean bag chairs for grownups. Purchase them as pieces or full sets.

There is an abundance of hotels in the Memorial District where you can enjoy some downtime. Four Points by Sheraton makes it easy to kick up your heels with classic style in all its rooms. Similarly, Hotel Zaza Memorial City offers cozy Concept Suites, such as the New Orleans-inspired Big Easy room, and the Magnificent Seven Suites, including the retreat-inspired Beach House room and the Parisian-inspired French Connection room. Also, there are often deals. Right now, you can get 20% off stays of 3 nights or more, or you can try the Perfectly Pampered bundle to get an overnight stay and a $200 ZaSpa credit.

Need somewhere to rest your head for an extended stay? Make yourself at home with the cozy amenities at Candlewood Suites CITYCENTRE. There is an indoor pool, a 24-hour fitness center, and more. Plus, you’re in the heart of the action in the Memorial District. Click here to find other fabulous overnight stays at places like The Moran Hotel CITYCENTRE and The Westin Memorial City.

Finally, talk with medical professionals if your sleep routine is off. There may be underlying health conditions making it hard for Mister Sandman to bring you a dream, and Memorial District physicians could uncover them. For example, Allergy & ENT Associates can determine if you have sleep apnea and then help you correct the problem and get your sleep back to normal.

Happy resting!
