A public hearing will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 2:30pm to discuss the next steps for the Houston Bike Plan. The Houston Bike Plan is the result of a 12-month cooperative study to assess and design a comprehensive network across the city that would make bicycling a safer, more easily accessible and available transit option for more Houstonians.
Bike Houston, one of the Plan partners, noted, "Full completion of the bikeway network would put high-comfort bikeways within reach of over 95% of people and jobs in the city. Within the short term, there is an opportunity for modest investments to add 381 miles to the current bikeways network. If fully implemented, the planned network would provide over six times more high-comfort bikeways miles than what exists now."
In late 2016, the Memorial District joined the efforts to promote bicycling within the District with the instillation of a bike share station at Pearl CItyCentre and a plan of installing 12 future bike share stations around the District in the next 3 years. We hope to continue to support biking initiatives in and around the city in the coming year.
The hearing takes place at the Council Chambers in the City Hall Annex, 900 Bagby.

A segment of the Terry Hershey Park trail north of Buffalo Bayou from the Beltway west to Kirkwood will be temporarily closed for repair while the Harris County Flood Control District addresses bank failures that occurred during the May flooding and subsequent dam releases.
Stabilization repairs have been ongoing but park visitors taking undue risks and not avoiding construction areas have led to concerns about dangerous situations occurring. "No trespassing" signs have been posted in the repair area and Harris County Constables will be paroling and issuing citations to people in violation of the trespassing ordinance. The park closure will be temporary as the construction teams complete their work.
Always be mindful during wet and inclement weather, especially near the Bayou and sites where construction is ongoing.
For more information on the repair project visit the Harris Country Flood Control District website.

The Memorial District, in partnership with the City of Houston, the Energy Corridor and Westchase districts, and the West Houston Association, was recently recognized by the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGCA) with an "Our Great Region" Award.
The award, in its first year, recognizes projects completed within HGAC’s 13-county area that address needs in six topic areas: transportation, the environment, economic development, resiliency, housing, and healthy communities.
In 2014, the partners completed a West Houston Mobility Study that assessed and analyzed the projected population grown of West Houston in the coming years and provided strategies to address mobility concerns associated with that growth. The plan included options for improved METRO connectivity, pedi-bike path growth and development, the addition of bike shares, and area circulators.
With its “Our Great Region” award, HGAC recognized the West Houston Mobility Study not only for the important information and analysis it provided, but for the unique and highly-successful collaboration between all partners involved.
The Memorial District was honored to be part of the mobility study and enthusiastic about working together with the partner organizations to ensure our area is growing and thriving in the best possible ways. Since the study, the Memorial District has kicked off a bike share program and continues to collaborate with study partners on mobility initiatives, such as working with the city and county on expanded pedi-bike paths.
