Celebrate the Joy of Reading with World Book Day in the Memorial District

Memorial District book lovers, this post is for you! World Book Day is an annual United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) event that takes place on April 23 to celebrate the joy of reading. Whether you need new book recommendations or already have a to-be-read stack of books as tall as your ceiling, you can find places to bring out your inner bookworm right here in the Memorial District.

When it comes to finding new books in an actual bookshop, the Barnes and Noble (12850 Memorial Dr, Unit 1600, Houston, TX 77024) at Town and Country Village is probably the best place to visit first. Every month, Barnes and Noble issues its monthly picks of books that often showcase a breadth of genres. The store also has an exciting range of titles you may not have heard of, such as Grace D. Li’s caper, Portrait of a Thief.

Urban Outfitters (799 Town and Country Blvd, Houston, TX 77024) has a quirky, unique selection of books for sale that you might not expect to see at a fashion retail store. For example, you could give Bullet Train by Kotaro Isaka a try before this story hits the silver screen this summer over at Cinemark Memorial City (310 Memorial City Way, Houston, TX 77024) and Studio Movie Grill CITYCENTRE (822 Town and Country Blvd, Houston, TX 77024). Are you or a young person in your home into animé? Urban Outfitters also has cool graphic novels, such as Naruto stories by Masashi Kishimoto and Demon Slayer stories by Koyoharu Gotouge.

You can also find a wonderful selection of books for the whole family at Target Memorial City (984 Gessner Rd, Houston, TX 77024). They have a fantastic variety of genres available, including bestsellers, fiction, nonfiction, mystery and crime, children’s books, thrillers, romance and more. You might also look to Trudy’s Hallmark Memorial City (303 Memorial City, Unit 834, Houston, TX 77024) for a light assortment of children’s books. As you might imagine, the books on offer at Trudy’s Hallmark are great as gifts, especially for the holidays, and you can pick up the greeting cards to go along with them there.

Although Spring Branch Memorial Branch Library (930 Corbindale Rd, Houston, TX 77024), part of the Harris County Public Libraries, is not right in the heart of our district, it is just a stone’s throw away. It’s a great place to find books to borrow and bring to a café, outdoor area, or restaurant here in our neighborhood. For outdoor reading, we recommend visiting a great Memorial District spot like the Conrad Sauer Detention Basin, which people already know and love as spot for biking and hiking. Want to spend time reading at a café or restaurant? How about giving Memorial District newcomers a try; for example, you could grab your books and head over to Daily Gather (800 Sorella Ct, Unit 940, Houston, TX 77024) or Postino Wine Café (791 Town and Country Blvd, Unit 146, Houston, TX 77024).

Easter is an excellent opportunity to make memories with family and friends. There are fun springtime holiday activities for children like visiting the Easter Bunny, painting eggs, and finding Easter baskets. Nike expanded its retail footprint in the Houston area with the opening of Nike by CITYCENTRE on Thursday, March 17. The 5,298-square-foot digitally-enabled store provides a thoughtfully curated experience for Houston residents.

 

Consumers can now unlock the best of Nike online and in-store. With convenience at the core of Nike by CITYCENTRE, consumers can directly connect with store teammates using Swoosh Text, a 1:1 SMS messaging service that allows consumers to check available inventory and receive product recommendations for sports and lifestyle products from an in-store team member.

 

 

The Houston community can also take advantage of the SNKRS PASS on the Nike SNKRS App, which uses GPS location to determine if a nearby Nike location has their preferred style available in their size.

Gymnastics is a fantastic way for children to develop flexibility, motor skills, and strength with help from a professional instructor. In the Memorial District, we have a couple of great gymnastics centers that you will flip for, and with summer break approaching soon, now is the time to check out what options are available. Birons Youth Sports Center

You will find gymnastics as well as tumbling, cheer classes, ninja zone, and aerial arts at Birons Youth Sports Center at 10225 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079. Birons takes students as young as 18 months old, and they offer everything from beginner-level courses to programs for competitive student-athletes. The classes are progression-based, so the instructors will assess where the students are in their learning and tailor the program to their needs.

Birons Youth Sports Center also offers exciting summer camps, both half-day from 9 a.m. to noon and full day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They even have extended morning and afternoon care options available. The gymnastics camp runs from May 31 to August 12. According to the website, it consists of “high energy training and focused skill practice on all Olympic rotations. Our half-day gymnastics camp is built on purpose, technique, quality, and having a blast!” There is also a ninja zone camp available for children who might have fun playing on the obstacle course. The 2022 summer camp registration is open now.

You can find Stars Gymnastics at 10516-G Katy Freeway Houston, Texas 77043 in the Home Depot parking lot next to Tuesday Morning. The mission here is to promote the sport of gymnastics while developing the self-esteem of the youth who study there. The staff receives extensive training in safety procedures, gymnastics curriculum, class management, and leadership. The instructors attend in-house professional development classes to ensure they are at the top of their game when they work with your children. All teachers are Safety Certified by USA Gymnastics, SafeSport Certified, and Background checked by USA Gymnastics.

Stars Gymnastics offers classes for children as young as one year old. Between one and five years of age, students participate in the preschool program, and they are separated by age. Children aged six and up begin in the recreational program, and they are also separated by age. The recreational program includes a beginner level that requires no prior experience, an intermediate level in which the students should know basic movements and terminology, an advanced level for students with experience, and an invitation-only developmental or pre-team program.

You can find some delightful and unexpected opportunities at Stars Gymnastics as well. For example, they offer birthday parties. They have a birthday party special for parents and children ages one to three, and they have group birthday parties for children ages four and up. For an hour and a half, the children have a chance to experience the trampoline, obstacle course, tumble track, rope, pit, and more with instruction from the coaches.

Now, things are getting even more exciting with the expansion of CITYCENTRE underway, the completion of the Marathon Oil building, and the redevelopment of Memorial City office spaces along with the planned development of a new office tower. These projects help cement the Memorial District as a leading center for business in Houston. The Memorial District’s great location and easy access to multiple destinations along with these new developments secure the Memorial District as the perfect place to work, play, and live.

CITYCENTRE Seven

Houston-based development company Midway recently announced the start of the CITYCENTRE Seven project. Replacing the former Four Points by Sheraton Hotel to take over the convenient location at the southeast corner of Interstate 10 and Beltway 8, this 6-story office building will have retail experiences available on the ground floor.

CITYCENTRE Seven will boast 147,000 square feet—nearly 120,000 square feet of which will be Class A office space. Plus, it will have more than 27,000 square feet of shops along with plenty of restaurants, boutique fitness centers, spa and wellness spaces, and convenient parking in a 7-level garage. It will also contain a Marriott International franchise AC Hotel, the second in Houston. CITYCENTRE Seven is already 97 percent leased, with a great mix of tenants. The new development will even contain a 44,590 square foot pocket park of green space.

“The CITYCENTRE area comprises a very dynamic and unique mix of office, retail, hotel, and residential offerings. The overall densification of CITYCENTRE is a testament to the fact that our city continues to grow, and people want to live, work in, and visit this area,” said Chris Seckinger, vice president of Midway.

Also, near the southeast corner of I-10 and Beltway 8 in Houston is the new Marathon Oil building, which opened in 2021. The new building brings the Marathon Oil workplace into the modern era, as the original building sprang up nearly 40 years ago. The update means the new workplace supports a better and more efficient work environment that allows for better collaboration and use of modern technology.

“Our new home aligns with our strategy and values, is closer to our highest employee population density, and it's within walking distance to dozens of CITYCENTRE convenience, dining and wellness options. MetroNational recently launched the $20 million renovation of Memorial City office towers. This exciting endeavor will improve the Memorial City Plaza space by adding nearly 1 million square feet of office space. The lobby of the plaza will also see improvements, and Two Memorial City Plaza will have a fitness center and a conference center. Best of all there will be a covered outdoor dining area called The Porch, and people who work within the complex will have access. We can hardly wait to see how this will turn out.

This combined with MetroNational’s plans for a nine-story building at 9753 Katy Freeway truly makes Memorial City a business powerhouse as well as a well-known retail center. The building will feature unprecedented amenities including a lobby with hospitality-driven social areas, first-floor restaurant and retail spaces and access to the Memorial City Club and the new Lawn greenspace for entertainment and events.

Town & Country Village

Showing their strength as a desirable mixed-use development, Gulf Coast Commercial Group, a Houston-based firm specializing in retail development, management and leasing, leased the nearly 5,000-square-foot, second floor space at 788 West Sam Houston Parkway North in Town & Country Village late last year and has now finished renovations and transferred operations.

According to Gulf Coast Commercial Group, Inc., President Tom Lile, “While our old office served us well for many years, the convenience of being in a low-rise structure and in a mixed-use area like Town & Country Village, offering a myriad of amenities within walking distance, has quickly grown on us all.”

CITYCENTRE

Over at CITYCENTRE, kick off Spring Break week with live inspirational music by Kameron Williams in the Plaza on Sunday, March 13 from 3–6 p.m. Enjoy nearby patios at bellagreen, Cyclone Anaya's, Daily Gather, or Yard House to cap off a perfect Sunday. And stop by and get a delicious ice cream cone at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams.

On Monday, grab your running shoes and meet up with the CITYCENTRE Running Club in front of lululemon at 6 p.m. for a 3.5-mile run. The group will grab a bite to eat afterward during happy hour at one of the fabulous restaurants in the community.

After providing excellent leadership at the Memorial District for 15 years, Executive Director Pat Walters is retiring. Pat joined us after serving as a Senior Project Manager for the Energy Corridor District and working with ConocoPhillips for 25 years.

Under Pat's leadership, the Memorial District has grown and improved with new buildings, new landscaping and beautification projects to enhance the community. Pat was instrumental in adding Constable patrols, BCycle Stations and improvement projects including the Conrad Sauer Detention Pond and Park Area.

Thank you for your tireless efforts on behalf of the Memorial District, and congratulations on your well-earned retirement!
