The Memorial District is excited to welcome Burn Memorial City to The Gateway. Burn Boot Camps are designed to maximize the workout for busy lifestyles, offering high-intensity in 45 minutes, boosted by a community of support.
Two years ago, Burn Memorial City owner Gwen Sheir tried out a Burn Boot Camp that opened near her Charlotte, North Carolina, home. From early on she was hooked. Sheir says, “It became a part of our routine and transformed our lifestyle.”
Sheir adds, “As women generally do, we don’t put ourselves first.” Burn offered her a chance to take back 45 minutes for herself, and with great results. In three months she lost 35 pounds. Her husband lost 55 pounds in four months.
Burn offers 45-minute bootcamps each weekday and an express daily 30-minute workout at 5am. Yoga is offered in addition to camp on Saturdays, and the Saturday and evening classes are co-ed.
Every workout is unique, and each day of the week has a different focus, so clients never repeat a workout. “You never know what you’re getting-in a good way!” Sheir says. “It’s never the same, never boring. You don’t feel like you’re working out.”
Burn trainers are highly-vetted and skilled at modifying and adjusting exercises to accommodate all fitness levels from the very athletic to the unconditioned.
Each membership includes free child watch during designated daily classes. Also included are focused meetings with trainers to discuss diagnostics, goals and nutrition.
Burn is about more than fitness and weight-loss however. Burn is a community. Burn trainers and Sheir strive to know each client, to reach out and connect with them. Client encourage and engage with each other. “It’s unlike any other gym,” says Sheir.
Beyond building community in the gym, Burn also gives back to the community outside the gym. This year, Burn Memorial City is working with Dress for Success.

The Queensbury Theatre is opening a new holiday musical, Striking 12, this Friday. The one-act preformance is a modern twist on Hans Christian Andersen's "Little Match Girl". The musical features three actors playing the keyboard, drums and electric violin.
The story starts on New Year’s Eve, as an over-worked and under-inspired single guy who’s had enough of holiday cheer makes a resolution: to stay home and go to bed early. On another New Year’s Eve, a continent away – and more than a century earlier – Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Match Girl tries unsuccessfully to sell her matches in the snow.
The two stories are brought together when a young woman selling special “full-spectrum holiday light bulbs” to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder shows up at the grumpy man’s door. Though the man (who probably could use the bulbs) seems to enjoy the young woman’s company, he sends her away. It’s not until he reads “The Little Match Girl” that he is finally pulled out of his funk.
All of this unfolds through a tuneful pop/rock/jazz score that retains the vibrant style of its original performers: the celebrated band, GrooveLily. Through simple, unpretentious theater created through the voices and instruments of the performers, Striking 12 reminds us that “the world looks like new… on the first day of the year."

Zayed’s Mediterranean Grill brings bold, fresh flavors to the Memorial District. This fast-casual restaurant opened its doors in CityCentre this month, offering family-friendly dining tastes for all palate.
The heart of Zayed’s is the grill. From shawarma to kebabs, beef to lamb, fish to eggplant, Zayed’s has something for everyone. Order from the grill and pair it with Zayed’s sides: hummus in many flavors, salads, hot dishes, Mediterranean classics like tabouli and baba ghanouge. Many of the recipes are naturally vegetarian and gluten free.
Everything at Zayed’s is made in house; the meat is halal and locally sourced as are the other ingredients including the produce and spices. While the commitment to making everything from scratch takes patience and work, owner and chef, Mike Zayed says, “It’s fun. We have a great team.”
Zayed studied Mediterranean cuisine internationally before coming to Houston and opening his first restaurant in 1990. Since then, he has opened Little Napoli Italian Cuisine and the Wine Cellar in the Theater District Downtown. After many years serving up Italian flavors, he decided it was time to go back to his roots and training and let Houston sample the flavors of Aleppo, Syria.
Situated between Sweet Paris and Bowl & Barrel, Zayed’s is a bright, open restaurant pairing rich wood with warm stone accents. Unique to this restaurant are the 20-foot-tall murals of photographed landmarks in Syria. In addition to ample seating, Zayed’s has a private dining room that can be reserved for group and private parties. Valet parking is complimentary for both lunch and dinner. If dining-in is not an option, try mobile ordering or delivery. Stop by today at 797 Sorella Ct, Ste 102 or online at zayedsgrill.com.
