UPDATE: Memorial City Chili Cook-Off POSTPONED

The Memorial City Chili-Cook Off has been postponed due to expected rain on Saturday.

Stay tuned for updates on a new date!

Add some spice to your weekend at the 2018 Memorial City Chili Cook-Off, presented by Briggs True on Saturday, February 10 from 11am – 2pm at The Lawn. Be a part of the excitement as restaurants and teams from around Memorial City and Houston throw down their best chili recipes, vying for the title of best cup of chili in Houston!

$15 general admission tickets will include access to chili samplings prepared by the different participating restaurants and local chili masters with a percentage of proceeds being donated to a non-profit charity.

To purchase tickets or register a chili team, visit http://houstonchilicookoff.com/ or email: info@briggstrue.com.

Every Friday at 5pm join us for Stars & Stripes at The Lawn, Memorial City’s newest event series to honor our country, those who have and continue to serve, and their families through a patriotic ceremony.

The inaugural event series kicks off Friday, January 19th, 2018 with a color guard performance by Scarborough High School’s JROTC program and live trumpet music. The weekly tribute will feature live performances by local military community groups such as Houston-area ROTC, Boy Scouts and other military programs, as well as live musical renditions of American classics, including ‘Grand Ole Flag’ and ‘God Bless America.’ The event will also offer light bites for purchase by a rotating roster of Memorial City restaurants.

‘Stars & Stripes’ is the first event series of many to debut at The Lawn. The greenspace joins the lively Memorial City development, alongside the recently opened Hotel ZaZa Memorial City and Ciro’s Italian Grill.

The fantastic 6th-8th grade students at the Trebble School are putting on a production of Urinetown, Jr. this week at the Queensbury Theatre. For tickets visit here.

Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America's greatest art forms. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

An event 67 million years in the making, come to The Square at 3pm for DinoFest: Jurassic Extreme! Spend the first part of the afternoon interacting with walking dinosaurs, dusting fossils, and enjoying prehistoric activities & crafts.

At 5pm we’ll be showing a special screening of Pixar’s, The Good Dinosaur on the 28’ x 14’, big screen TV, so don’t forget to bring your blankets and lawn chairs! Grab dinner before at one of the many nearby restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen, Maggiano’s, or the food court, and enjoy the movie under the stars!

The Queensbury Theatre is excited to welcome new producing executive director Marley Singletary. Singletary helped start TUTS Underground and comes to the Queensbury Theatre poised to take it to the next level as a hub for theatre and the arts in West Houston.

Formerly the Country Playhouse, the theatre came into its new incarnation as the Queensbury Theatre with the opening of its stunning 21,000 square foot space in 2015.  With a main stage and a black box, the intimate spaces and innovative design of the new Queensbury Theatre lend themselves to smaller, newer productions and musicals.

Singletary sees the Queensbury as a theatre for the community that supports local artists and actors and the community at large through efforts like its Harvey relief fundraiser that raised $18,000 for the Mayor’s Fund.

Singletary has always had a love for theatre. Growing up in rural Louisiana with lots of time and imagination, she used to write plays for her friends to put on. Those early beginnings led her to London and a masters in directing before coming to Houston to work with Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS).

As a director, Singletary loves crafting the overall vision of a story and delving into the people and places that help shape the visual and emotional experience for the audience.Like Striking 12 running through December 23. This one-act modern production inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Match Girl is full-on energy and vibrant music.

In February, catch the regional debut of Unlock’d. With an all-local cast, crew and designer, this musical -billed a “modern-ish fairytale”- “fuses baroque and classical with contemporary pop musical theatre in a story about the roles we are born into and people we secretly wish to become.”

Two more shows are planned for spring to finish out the full season.

A dynamic dining option at The Gateway, State Fare’s bold take on Southern flavors are sure to please any palate.

The restaurant, on the southwest corner of Gessner and the Katy Freeway, is as inviting as its menu. Decked out in cool blues and neutrals, the mix of industrial and tufted, subway tiles and marble work in the best way, much like the food at State Fare: interesting meets classic with modern twists on Southern comfort.

Opened in 2016, State Fare is part of the Cherry Pie Hospitality family of restaurants owned by Lee Ellis with partner Jim Mills. Mills notes, “State Fare has a cool vibe, and when guests enter they are greeted with friendly smiles and a sense of true hospitality.”

The menu has over 70 items ranging from snacks and salads to chicken fried steak and mac n’ cheese. “The menu is highly representative of Southeast Texas cuisine featuring ample portions of tasty classics, fresh seafood and delicious salads. The creative idea behind the menu is to showcase the great food that Lee Ellis and I grew up loving,” says Mills.

In addition to great food, Leslie Harvey has crafted eclectic and innovative cocktails and curated a range of over 40 craft beers. Mills adds, “We appeal to local families, business professionals and visitors alike.” And don’t miss State Fare’s decadent brunch offering on Saturday and Sundays starting at 10am.

Mills menu favorites include, “Sabine Pass Gumbo and Ray’s Fried Catfish, which features my Dad’s recipe. Quite a few dishes are from family recipes which sets State Fare apart from most other restaurants of the genre.”
