New novel mobile app works to reduce distracted driving motor vehicle collisions

Memorial Hermann Life Flight® is working with the SAFE 2 SAVE mobile app to reward drivers who put their mobile devices down and keep their eyes on the road. The sponsorship is part of Memorial Hermann Health System’s ongoing educational and targeted prevention efforts to drive change in behaviors and reverse the startling rise in distracted driving motor vehicle collisions in the Greater Houston Area.

Deaths related to distracted driving motor vehicle collisions rose 62 percent in Harris County from 2016 to 2017, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. In 2017, more than 19 percent of motor vehicle collisions in Texas involved distracted driving, resulting in 444 deaths and more than 2,800 serious injuries, according to TxDOT. The Houston Chronicle recently labeled the Greater Houston Area’s driving conditions as the country’s most distracted and deadliest, based on its analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.

Many distracted driving motor vehicle collisions are preventable.

Memorial Hermann will serve as the presenting sponsor of SAFE 2 SAVE in the Houston market. SAFE 2 SAVE rewards drivers for not using mobile devices while driving. For every minute a driver does not touch their mobile device while driving, they receive points that can be redeemed at select Houston area businesses such as Chick-fil-A®, Papa John’s Pizza®, Dave & Buster’s® and Rooftop Cinema Club®.

“We are thrilled to partner with Memorial Hermann Life Flight® on bringing SAFE 2 SAVE to the Houston market,” said Marci Cory, Owner & Founder of SAFE 2 SAVE. “With this partnership we hope to reach every Houstonian and serve as a driving force in reversing the rising trend of distracted driving impacting the Houston, Harris County and surrounding areas.”

“We see so many patients involved in motor vehicle collisions that are often caused by some distraction or impairment,” said Michelle McNutt, MD, Chief of Trauma at the Red Duke Trauma Institute at Memorial Hermann-TMC and McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. “If we can change the behaviors of Houstonians, we can help reduce the number of friends and families who experience the devastating toll these preventable collisions take on the community.”

It’s the season for family, fun, and lots of food! Unfortunately, the holidays can create challenges for those trying to manage their diabetes and even others trying to stick to a diet and stay healthy.

“Not only are there a lot of tempting treats during the holidays, but you often can’t control what’s being served. We encourage people to remember that it’s about balance and moderation. If eating from a buffet, try selecting a small plate so that you’re more likely to select smaller portions. If you do have some sweets, cut back on the carbohydrate you choose for the meal to keep the blood sugar in balance,” says Gail Llewellyn, RN, BSN, CDE, a Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center.

Llewellyn also says it’s important to make time for plenty of exercise and sleep.

“Exercise doesn’t have to be an hour at the gym. It could also be taking a walk through the neighborhood to deliver gifts, going to the park with the family after a meal, playing catch with the kids outside, or taking everyone bowling. The holidays are hectic, so just think about different ways to stay active, and then make sure you call it quits in time to get a good night’s sleep. Seven to nine hours is recommended.”

When it comes to traveling, keep healthy snacks on hand.

“Traveling, and even just running errands, can alter your normal eating schedule, so make sure you have something on hand in case you can’t eat right away, like healthy snack bars, fruit and a cheese stick or raisins and nuts. Snacks should be a combination of a carbohydrate to bring the blood sugar up and a protein to stabilize the blood sugar.  That will carry you safely to the next meal and prevent overeating once you get to that meal,” says Llewellyn.

Most importantly, Llewellyn wants to remind people not to get discouraged if they get off track.

“Don’t let one day or one meal derail you, everyone gets off track sometimes. If you indulge too much, re-focus on spending time with friends and family, not food. Drink lots of water, maybe do a little extra exercise, and get back on track. Everyone needs to eat healthy and exercise, not just those with diabetes, so enlist the help of friends and family to help each other enjoy in a healthy way—that truly can be a ‘reason for the season’.”

If you want to learn how to manage your diabetes, Memorial Hermann offers ADA Recognized Diabetes Self- Management Education and Support Programs. You will receive an individualized assessment of your needs, and tools to achieve your personal health goals. A physician’s referral is required. For more information, visit Memorial Hermann's Diabetes Center.

Parking can be a bit stressful, but here are resources to help you through the day. Here’s the parking options at City Centre. At Memorial City Mall they’ve put together this great holiday guide to help you maximize your efficiency at the mall.

Whether you are at the shopping centers or at individual stores, remember to pack your patience and be courteous. Happy shopping!

With the holiday season upon us, our schedules promise to be even more hectic than ever. Here are 5 tips from the Office of Constable Ted Heap, Harris County Precinct 5 to keep you and your loved ones safe while enjoying the holiday.

1. Don't leave valuables in an unoccupied vehicle. It's said time and time again, but car burglary is a crime of opportunity. Most often the victims of vehicle burglaries had left their vehicles unsecured or a valuable item inside the vehicle. Value is in the eye of the beholder, what may not be valuable to you may be worth the risk to a criminal. Also, remember to take your key fob with you, as most modern cars have remote entry features that rely on the presence of the fob.

2. Photograph the boxes of items you purchase. Keeping track of item models and serial numbers may seem unnecessary, but as we saw with Hurricane Harvey, there are a multitude of reasons to document your property, such as theft, flood or loss. Before you toss the box this holiday season, snap a picture of the model and serial number. Then, remember to break down boxes - electronics packaging is a great advertisement for thieves.

3. Share your location. There are a multitude of phone apps that keep us more in the loop than ever before. Before you and your loved ones go out for the night, on a trip, or to the mall, have a plan in place to know where everyone is. Many people use smart phone features such as Share My Location to let loved ones know where they are and, most importantly, that they are safe.

4. Look for the "S". Another tech tip for the holiday is to look at the website URL when purchasing an item online. If the URL does not start with https:// (emphasis on the “s”) then the site may not be secure. If you ever are in doubt about a website’s security, try calling the store to verify, or head out to a local retailer. More often than not, retailers will match online pricing so you don't have to worry about compromising your information.

5. When in doubt, call it out. Sometimes we see things that make us go, "Hmm..." If you're ever in doubt of your security or the well-being of someone else, don't hesitate to call the authorities. Listed below are the non-emergency numbers for all of the local law enforcement entities in our area. We'd rather you call and not need us than need us and not call us! If it's an emgency, please call 9-1-1.

Have a safe and happy holiday season, y'all.
